Book review: You Wouldn’t Catch Me Dead
The book ‘You Wouldn’t Catch Me Dead’ is written by Tess James-Mackey and published on the 18th of January 2024. It is based on a place where the author travels to with her parents when she was young. In the story, a group of 16 years old teenagers are going on an extracurricular programme but as they arrive, things start to go out of control. The language was well chosen, and the plot keeps on giving readers surprises.
Firstly, the characters involved in this story are Mr Crewe, Ms Proctor, Hanna, Chloe, Jack, Roshni, Barry, Keely, her old friend Amy and Reece. Keely is a girl who isn’t engaging in any sort of activity, especially academically associated. However, she got persuaded by her parents to try for once and participate in the Onward Programme. Coming along with her is a teacher, Mr Crewe and an assistant teacher Ms Proctor with another five 16-year-olds who really want to succeed. The difference of personalities between all the people makes the story interesting for readers.
Secondly, the setting is based in an abbey in the mountains with ruins of ancient buildings. It is always raining, and fog appears everywhere. In the night there are cries of owls and howls of different creatures. The unpredictable and gloomy setting builds up suspense throughout the whole book.
Furthermore, the plot is about how Keely got into the Onward Programme where students camp in the mountains for three days. Keely wasn’t there to make friends because of her backstory about her old friend Amy and Amy’s boyfriend, Reece. However, things start to go wrong, and bodies are starting to pile up. Keely needs to figure out who is doing all of this before it is too late. The exciting plot and different cliff hangers keep readers excited for more.
Lastly, the theme of this book is about friendship and courage. In the story, Keely regrets for not being a good friend and not being able to save her friend. During the Onward Programme where teachers and students starts to disappear, friendship and trust becomes extremely important. The programme taught Keely to make friends again. The theme also teaches readers to trust themselves.
In summary, You Wouldn’t Catch Me Dead is a story with many different characters and personalities. The setting builds up suspense and the plot is unpredictable. It is both a scary but heart-warming story. I really enjoyed reading it and I strongly recommend it to anyone!

You Wouldn’t Catch Me Dead is a great horror book and I enjoyed reading it. I liked learning about Keely and how her past affects the way she acts around other people. I loved the plot of the book and feeling the suspense of finding out who the murderer was. It was nice to see how Keely’s character changed from the beginning to the end. Overall this is an amazing book and I definitely recommend it if you like reading horror/crime/thriller books!

In my opinion, “You wouldn’t catch me dead” is an intriguing murder mystery book which always has the reader guessing what’s going to happen next. The story follows a loner girl called Keely who isn’t interested in making friends because of past trauma that is carefully dotted throughout the story. She goes on a camping trip she doesn’t want to attend with smart onward programme kids she didn’t want to associate with. However, over time she learns to accept them and stop pushing them away. It is the sort of book that always keeps you on your toes and each chapter leaves you wondering what happens next. The story slowly unravels and things start to make more sense and add up as you read more. In terms of the killing aspect, you’re always questioning who the killer is because they always switch up potential suspects, so the plot twist was unexpected. The ending was both touching and wholesome and really shows how Keely develops as a person and learns to appreciate and love life again.

I have never been a fan of horror books before but this book really made me want to read more horror books and get out of the usual genre of books that I read and read different ones. My favourite character was Barry because even though the book was scary,Barry was so positive and knew what he was doing which really helped the group in certain moments. Overall, I really enjoyed the book and I would rate a 7.5/10

SPOILER ALERT!

This book was something like I never read before. It included character development, romance and horror. I loved how the chapters change from the present to the past, slowly revealing the tragic past of Keely and I went from being completely confused and a mind full of questions to knowing the character so well I could almost sympathise with her. My favourite part was the grand reveal of Reece being the one held accountable for all the crimes and deaths, and finishing the book knowing that he is dead somehow made me feel more relaxed, as if it was only going to be up from here. The quote I loved was “they were falling, tripping over the low wall of the tower. She heard Reece screaming and hazily wondered if she could be screaming too. She wondered how badly it would hurt when she hit the bottom…” this line was excellent as it was like a mini cliffhanger, how the story would end.

I used to not like horror a lot but because of this, I have actually grown to love them! In You wouldn’t catch me dead, my favourite character was Barry as he was so positive and he really knew what he was doing which really helped the group in certain moments. Barry was also so caring especially to Keely at the night when the rock hit her back. My favourite part of the book was when Keely met the soldiers because it really showed Keely’s sassiness towards other people and how she could stand up for herself. Overall I really enjoyed this book and how it was very detailed in different places and how she shows the different characters’ emotions.

I really loved this book. I don’t normally read horror type books but I found this one enjoyable. It kept me on the edge of my seat the whole way through and probably is the quickest I’ve ever read a book before. I found it incredibly well-written and it had an interesting setting. I loved watching Keely’s interpretations of the different characters (especially Barry and Roshni) shift as she spent more time with them. Keely’s retellings of Amy were very sweet and well spread throughout and I couldn’t help but read 5 chapters at a time. The ending was incredibly bittersweet and I loved the wholesome message and how Keely figures out how to cope with the loss of her best friend while also learning to let new ones into her life. Barry and Keely’s relationship was adorable and exactly what Keely needed through the nightmare trip. I would rate this book a 9.5/10.

I would recommend this book for people who want to get into reading horror books but don’t know where to start. I enjoyed the book and was instantly pulled in by the first death in one of the first few chapters. However, after that the book began to slow down again… until the next death. I kept thinking ‘surely that’s it now!’ but the deaths kept coming. I genuinely enjoyed the book and I think it’s a must read for beginner horror book fans!

You wouldn’t catch me dead is the first book I read, and is also the book that stuck with me the most. As a horror story enjoyer, I love the psychological horror elements present throughout, as well as the big reveal at the end. I found myself re-reading the book to try and spot the key details that hinted at this finale and enjoyed it just as much as the previous time. The contrast of Keely and the rest of the group showed how her past traumas make her stand out from the crowd, which made her behave like a “stereotypical teen”.

‘You wouldn’t catch me dead’ is one of my favourite books because of the fast paced thrilling events in almost every single chapter! Personally my favourite thing about the book was trying to work out who the killer was the entire time. My idea kept on changing because of plot twists all the time. I liked this because usually you can guess mysteries in books but in this you didn’t have a clue. Kelly is a quiet, sarcastic character who really adds to the book with her own unique characteristics. Personally my favourite scene was when they found Jack tied up around the pole in a bad way with blood dripping down his face and not able to stand up as it made me think many questions such as, Who did this? and why?
I also think the setting in the mountains in Wales with old stone buildings around them adds to the story in a way that makes it feel more abandoned but as if something or someone is watching them the entire time. Overall I would really recommend this book to people who like fast paced thrillers but also special characters who appeal to you add an interesting perspective to the story rather than a strong, heroic main character. 8/10 Really good and exciting read.

SPOILER ALERT!!

‘You wouldn’t catch me dead’ had a surprising plot and was a page turner right from the start. At the start Keely is just on the trip to please her parents, but when the bodies started to ‘pile up’, she decided that making friends with Barry was not so bad. I did though like how thrilling and adventurous this book was, a new surprise could appear any time, and at times, it had me on the edge of my seat. Although, to be honest, I wasn’t very surprised when I found out the killer was Reece, and from the start I had guessed Ms Proctor was involved. Overall, I found the book unrealistic, and this sort of put me off reading it, but if you like horror, I think it can be enjoyed.

WOW!!!!!!!!! An amazing thriller of a book where a challenged young teenager faces death, evil and destruction. Are the people she thinks are friends actually her friends – well, associates? Old enemies return and new friends are made in this amazing tale. I couldn’t put it down!

I adored this fast-paced book for so many things, but mainly for the main character, Keely. Her dark back story is a key component for the fabulous plot.

You wouldn’t catch me dead was a book with a lot of murder, suspicion and friendships.
It was about a girl who felt guilty about her best friend’s death. She moves to another town to try and start a new life. However, she is forced to go on a school trip by her parents. On the trip her teacher falls of a cliff (or is pushed) and the other teacher leaves to go and get help but never returns. They find dead bodies in the toilet block and while exploring and it just gets a lot more sinister after that. There are two soldiers who throw rocks at her tent and other sinister things happen. In the end, it turns out the other teacher was actually being exploited by the murderer.

I thoroughly enjoyed the aspect of death and how the setting is very well described and in the wilderness. It almost makes me feel like I’m actually there! I think this is my favorite read by far. I was also very fond of how the writer presents Keely almost ‘anti-social’ instead of being eager to make friends.

In my opinion, ‘you wouldn’t catch me dead’ is one of the best horror books I have read. It had the perfect level of gore and I just couldn’t put it down.
At the end of every chapter it left you on a cliffhanger which made you wonder or imagine what could happen next and then you couldn’t just leave it at that so you just end up reading another few chapters.
From beginning to end it had me on the edge of my seat, perfectly navigating me through a storm of emotions.
I particularly enjoyed trying to figure out who it could be and coming up with some quite unusual theories.
I think that Kelly’s character development was amazing and enjoyed how Reece was only referred to by his name a few times, the rest it was just he. It was as if even the narrator couldn’t bear to say the name that caused the characters so much pain.
I read the other book by this author last year and thought it was amazing and didn’t think she could top it but here I am a year later saying that she’s done it! The book took me on a whole emotional rollercoaster from scared, to sad to even laughing at some points.
I would give this book a 9.5/10. Overall I am impressed and can’t wait to see what else she has in store for us next.

I thought this book was really intriguing, I couldn’t put it down!! I thought that the twist at the end was very shocking and I had no idea who it was (or what it was…). I also loved how they had so many suspects so it made the reader more confused. I also think the rural setting made it a bit more scary because it felt like the characters could do nothing and they were helpless while a murderer was out.
This book was really good!

I think You wouldn’t catch me dead is a very good mix for the readers of crime, horror and thriller because it hold all the experiences you could ask for. Personally I liked it but on a scale of one to ten, I think it would be a 6 out of 10. I really like the factors of when the book had chapters of Keely’s because it gave me a sense of what trauma she had been through before this. I think the plot is a little bit complex because it has so many ups and downs, but for some readers that is the whole point to be surprised. When Reece came in that really shocked me and it had me wanting to read more but I think there were too many deaths because the rating of the book was around 13+. It went on for a bit too long but I liked the freedom of which Tess James-Mackey wrote. I would recommend this to others in year 8 and above.

This book is the type of book that leaves you on the end of your seat. I read at night and it scared me to the point I wanted to stop reading but I got so hooked I would stay. I would start reading at 7 and only stop when my parents came in at the hours of 1-2 when I was told to stop. When I finished it felt like losing a best friend because I had become so attached. My rating: 8.5/10
I absolutely adored this book, at first it was a little too slow paced , but then it began to get really interesting. The ups and downs of this book, the ending (in my eyes) was quite diabolical I wish there was more context to the ending, it was really well done I just really wanted to see more of it. The description of the woodland setting was so intriguing and well done, I could picture it all in my head, great imagery. Personally I LOVE horror books and this one just really enveloped my senses. This book kept me on the edge of my seat so props to Tess James-Mackey as she really brought this book to life. I read her other book – ‘someone is watching you’ and I had the same response, phenomenal author , she really knows how to create a suspenseful and tense atmosphere, I would definitely recommend this book!

I really enjoyed You wouldn’t catch me dead. It was fast paced, intense and you could feel the eerie feeling basically coming off the pages. Finding out about Keeley’s best friend, Amy, really pulled at the strings of my heart but I enjoyed watching Barry and Keeley’s friendship grow. My favourite part was probably where the stones were thrown onto the kids tents as it really set the tone for the book. I liked watching Keeley grow as a character and maybe learn to have fun in the future.

Thrilling, fast-paced and tense, this edge-of-your seat page turner of a book was a compelling read that many people who try will like. I read this book and was immediately stunned at the quick turning point of Mr Crewe’s death, as I have read her previous book “Someone is watching you” and in that book, whilst it was suspenseful, most of each build up did not result in a climax and was rattled off as something quite plain, whereas the deaths in “You wouldn’t catch me dead” were somewhat too sudden, creating a stark comparison between these two books.

However, I appreciated the way that the isolated setting leant into the storyline of the book, and the way that James- Mackey creates a tense atmosphere which continues to make you guess and question the storyline and the characters’ predicament. Keely’s backstory in regards to Amy was well placed in the storyline, and I liked how it leant into her story in the present. In particular, the bit in which we find out who the murderer was was my favourite scene, as I didn’t expect said murderer to be capable of this, and to be able to assist the other murderer.

Overall, I’d recommend this to anyone interested in a gripping thriller, and for fans of Ravena Guron.

I also enjoyed how Keely’s character progresses through the book. Also I found that the setting of the Abbey really brought the book together. I found it quite surprising when Miss Proctor went to hug Reece and he killed her without hesitation. You Wouldn’t Catch Me Dead book review
You Wouldn’t catch me dead was one of my favourite books – best I have ever read.
It was a thrilling book with twists in the tale and there were cliffhangers in nearly every chapter
which kept me on the edge of my seat. My favourite part of the plot was when Barry and Keely stood in the darkness and there was a black figure standing opposite them and it was very exciting to see what was going to happen. Overall, this is a book that I would recommend to other people because it is scary but it is also not that scary at the same time so you should be able to read it. Something that surprised me in the end was that Mrs Procter and Reece were behind the killings. I didn’t expect Mrs Procter to do that because she seemed like a nervous person who wouldn’t do something like that, and I didn’t expect Reece to come from that far away.

This story is about a teenage girl called Keeley, she is trying to get through teenage life with humour and sarcasm. When she gets dragged into a school trip to the Welsh mountains, she didn’t know what she had got herself into. She had to face challenges that were not only physically but mentally challenging to go through, this was not what she had planned when the week started.
Tess James Mackey wrote this in a very clever way to attract young readers to read this thriller of a book, in the way that she made the cover of the book look eerie and exciting which just makes you want to know what’s going to happen next. I think how the author wrote this book to make you keep reading is that she made that mystery element to make you hooked onto the book and you can’t let go.
My favourite part of the book was when they kept thinking they were being haunted/ tortured by supernatural figures outside their tent and they had to investigate on what they should do but I have to mention if I haven’t already about her hilarious sarcasm throughout the book. This is what I think kept me reading, but overall I think this is a very engaging and enjoyable book.

For a book with a small cast of six students, one teacher and a maths assistant, plus a few other people, the body count is impressive. So many people die in this camping murder-fest that, if the rain and isolation and cold hadn’t put you off camping, then the body count would! You would not catch me dead is a book about a small group called the Onwards Program run by a teacher (Mr Crew) and the maths assistant(Mrs Proctor). Keely the main character must put her traumatic past behind her and move forward to find out who the murderer is! Tess James Makey mixes up yet another spooky story with a mysterious plot!

I thought that this book was very good and it had many different features. It was good because it would build up a lot of tension and it was quite scary. It was also amazing because near to the end everything started to piece together and it started to make a bit more sense. I think You wouldn’t catch me dead was a really good book and I loved it. All the mysteries and Keely trying to figure everything out was just great and all of the ups and downs in the book. I also like the slow pace of the book which leaves you time to try and figure things out for yourself. Also it’s a good contrast of characters with everyone else being quite smart while she is just doing it for her parents and doesn’t really want to be there at all.

The main character is funny and relatable which adds a lot to the story whilst the setting is dark and creepy where it rains a lot. Perfect for a thriller! There was so much tension and anticipation and all of this just on a school trip. It was terrifying!

I think this book was a masterpiece; the way that it was written was amazing. The characters were really well in depth especially Keely with her past trauma. It is good to see that she had a happy maybe happier ending than it started with and I also liked how you could kind of guess who was doing all the things to them but you were just on your seat, like is it them or not? I feel like the author did such a good job of writing what it would be like for a loved one to die because in my mind with most of the death I feel like I could picture it and during the epilogue I genuinely started to tear up.

In my option the blurb gave too much away and made the already predictable plot more predictable. I still very much enjoyed it and loved watching Keely develop as the book went on.

I really enjoyed reading this book. The amount of tension had me on the edge of my seat. It’s probably the best crime-thriller book I’ve ever read. this book was clearly chosen for a reason and I can see why.

This is a must read in my opinion.

You wouldn’t catch me dead.
In the book ‘You wouldn’t catch me dead’ the author creates a thrilling, horrific mystery that captivates the reader – even those who don’t read much! The story is about the death of an important character that shows leadership and determination, it leaves the group in pieces. Shortly following a trail of deathly plots unfold as the author includes twists and tricks that keeps the reader on the edge of their seat.
In my opinion the book was incredible. Personally, I adore murders and horror books, and this was nothing like any of the others I have ever read. Usually, I can predict the plot but this book left me thinking. I was completely stunned by the ending, and I just think the writing was spectacular.
However, I think that we didn’t get much time at the start to the book to fully read and interpret the characters which would have been intriguing to get to know them better before the plot started. However, this is only one minor thing that I have managed to come up with as the book in my opinion is perfect. I would definitely recommend this to any other readers that adore any kind of horrors, mystery and murder. Overall, I think it was a great book and I send my thanks the author for keeping me entertained!

You wouldn’t catch me dead is a really thrilling, compelling and a horror based genre story book. The Author Tess James-Mackey had used many types of elements like plot twists and unexpected situations. It keeps me exhilarated and constantly pondering; it is also quite terrifying as there often appeared mysterious figures which creeps me out. I also liked the way the Author frequently gives us hints in every chapter for us to anticipate what might happen next and slowly reveals who the killer is. In my opinion, the most important things that kept me entertained are the cliff hangers, which makes me want to read more. This book is definitely recommended for the readers who likes thriller/horror genres

My review on ‘You wouldn’t catch me dead.’

I loved this book. Every time I turned the page there was another plot twist. Each chapter seemed to end with a cliff-hanger leaving me on the edge of my seat. I couldn’t put it down!
The main character is funny and relatable which adds a lot to the story whilst the setting is dark and creepy where it rains a lot. Perfect for a thriller! There was so much tension and anticipation and all of this just on a school trip. It was terrifying!

I highly recommend this book.

Couldn’t read it before bed! A lot of deaths. Middle part was at an ok pace but the end was just a sudden stop and suddenly everything was ok. The whole ‘they were stuck and couldn’t get away’ is somewhat believable coming from someone who listens to true crime but I think that the first death followed by the others was too quick. Usually it would be Suspense, suspense and a death , suspense maybe a mental jump scare and another death, but this was; a little suspense, hears a sudden death , jump scare, death , death death.

Overall an ok read , not exactly my type of genre though, 6/10

You Wouldn’t Catch Me Dead is a truly captivating novel. Set in the Welsh highlands, Keely and her fellow group of overkeen students witness murder after murder. And while they all don’t have enemies who are prone to murder, Keely does…

This book is a fantastic example of a crime thriller, but with elements of a descriptive novel embedded in as well. Interesting as well as spooky, this book is a amazing read for anyone into a murder mystery with an eerie setting. My favourite part of this book is that the abbey really exists, and Tess James-Mackey didn’t just make it up! I also loved how Keely is painted as the hero, but in reality she would rather just run away as fast as her legs can carry her! The murders, the new school and her past really makes her look like a survivor.

This book really is outstanding and definitely deserves to win the Southern School Book Award!

You wouldn’t catch me dead has a crime thriller approach which is truly mesmerizing. The book has a suspense like no other of keeping you on edge. I would definitely recommend this book to my friends. The camping description has an eerie feel to the atmosphere. The entry of the new school, Keely applying for the school trip, makes her look like a true survivor.

Keely is left in the wilderness to survive, as everyone falls she has a job to do, run and survive….
My overall rating is 4 stars, very enticing and is an entertaining book.

My book review on “You Wouldn’t Catch Me Dead”.
In my opinion this book is one of the best books I have ever read – the tension and awareness of the story makes the book really exciting to read and the way most chapters leaves you on a cliff hanger really makes me want to read on and find out more of what will happen next. My most favourite part the the book is when the characters leave to go somewhere, they nearly every time find a dead body or something strange will happen which makes the book very exciting to read. My favourite character is definitely Keely as it really expresses her emotions and who of a character she really is. In my opinion this book really sets a murder mystery theme and it made me very eager to read till the end of the book to find out who the killer was!

I thought that at the beginning of this book it was quite slow but as it went on it gradually got better by each body they found and as they get closer to the end of the book the atmosphere gets darker and the plot starts to make more sense

In my mind this was a great crime thriller book

I thought it was a really well structured book and I enjoyed it. I liked the characters, setting and the back story of Keely’s best friend Amy. What I also like is how every single chapter after Mr Crewe’s death is left on an extreme cliff-hanger which immediately makes you want to read another chapter. Furthermore, the continuous tension is what makes the book an overall thriller. What I very much enjoyed as well is how Kelly’s backstory blends in to the present, with Reece and the dolls strung across Keely’s tent. Overall I thought it was a great book and after that I think I will read ‘someone is watching you’.

My review for you wouldn’t catch me dead:

In my opinion this is a very very good book! There was so many cliff hangers that made me want to keep on reading all night. Many chapters in this book made me very surprised and I liked how Keely slowly warmed up to everyone and how braved she stayed. I also liked how at the end they revealed who the killer is and it made me very surprised to the point were I wanted the book to keep on going! This is definitely my new favourite book.

You Wouldn’t catch me dead is a very interesting crime thriller that I would want a sequel to. This Book is about a girl called Keely on a school trip with “obnoxious” teenagers on a diabolical and haunted trip to The Abbey in Wales. The setting from the book is very well chosen as the eerie mountains with an isolated Abbey is an interesting yet intimidating setting. Keely, like most teenagers, is bored of school and wants to be understood, making this trip a way to be understood and a way to understand other teenagers her age. I pondered for many minutes on how this book could relate to myself, and decided that it genuinely captures an amazing insight on how teenagers are. Many of Keely’s traits could be related to; many of us are wanting to be understood and be sympathised with but we seem distant to people and are often not understood enough.

My review on this book is that it is amazing as it captures most teenagers’ minds as we always yearn for empathy and being understood. Keely’s thoughts could be have been mine when I was depressed and sad yet no one understood me. Amazing book with eerie yet great setting for us to enjoy.

You Wouldn’t Catch Me Dead is a terrifying and unique crime thriller. Interesting yet horrifying backstories drive Keely away from Kent. Keely plans to keep her past inside of herself and not make ANY friends at her new school. However when she signed up for the Onward Programme everything goes wrong in the valley of the Black Mountains…

This book kept me engrossed in the story right until the final page. I would highly recommend this exceptional book!

My review of You Would Not Catch Me Dead

When I first started the book, no one could have prepared me for what’s inside. This book was filled with plot twists, drama, cliff hangers, murders and so much more. I could not put this book down and it always kept me on the edge of my seat. My favourite part of the book is the foreshadowing of the mysterious ‘creature ‘ in the background. This book is GREAT it is an awesome thriller and mystery, it has the biggest surprises and keeps you always at the edge of your seat. Lots of the chapters end in cliff hangers and it shows how much people can get affected by their past and how they can change and make friends. And I don’t want to spoil it for people but when the killer is revealed it gets very interesting.

Book review on ‘You wouldn’t catch me dead’

I liked this but thought it was quite scary.
Every page I turned had me on the edge of my seat without knowing what was going to happen next. At the start if the book I really like how Keely started to describe everyone’s personalities and what she thought of them.
But I would recommend it to others even though I was not keen on it.

I really enjoyed reading this book as the way Keely’s character develops from being easily irritable and afraid of making new friends to risking her life to save the people that she would have pushed off the cliff herself just days before. This book presents life threatening situations that can either make you crumple from the pressure or rise above during a time of need. Guess which one Keely did…

I quite liked the book You couldn’t catch me dead, I thought it had a good plot and it was more exciting towards the end, and I liked Keely’s diabolical personality. I thought this thriller was perfectly weaved with back stories, plot twists, cliffhangers and shocks. The more chapters I read, the harder it became to put down. I really enjoyed the disturbing encounters that Keely, Barry, Jack and Roshni came across. I loved the cliffhangers at the end of almost each chapter towards the end of the book, when I knew that the whole story was about to be unravelled, but just one more thing had to happen. The cliffhangers gave a really strong creepy and unnerving effect. I thought the plot was brilliant and I couldn’t believe how Keely and her new friends were pranked – or a bit more than pranked.

Overall, I thought it was one of the best books I’ve ever read and I would certainly recommend it to others. A great read!

You Wouldn’t Catch Me Dead – Review

It is an engaging thriller, but I am not a fan of horror or generally anything creepy. But if you like that sort of book then this is perfect. Filled with plot twists that leave you questioning, red herrings and a very revealing end, You Wouldn’t Catch Me Dead will leave you questioning every noise you hear at night. Barry is probably my favourite character and when he showed bravery in … then he became one of my favourite characters. A couple of things that I didn’t like was how spooky it was, this is my opinion, but I wasn’t too fond of it, personally I’m not a fan of anything horror related but it was a good book otherwise. Tess James-Mackey is a talented author and I can’t wait for her to come to the school.

You wouldn’t catch me dead had a thrilling plot and was a page turner right from the start. Even though at the start Keely seems like quite a sassy character, Tess James-Mackey was really good at making you empathise with her, especially in the trial. At the start Keely is just on the trip to please her parents, but when the bodies started appearing she decided that being friends with Barry was not so bad. I enjoyed reading this book so much that now I also want to read ‘Some one is watching you’. Overall, the book was really well written and I would recommend it to others.

This book kept me anticipating the next thrill after every chapter. I especially loved the combination of the haunted setting of the Abbey with the ominous atmosphere of the Black Mountains as it created what I thought was the perfect scene for a murder. Keely’s life (and what happened to her best friend Amy) before the Onward Programme worked its way into the plot beautifully and everything became clear as the mystery unfolded. The plot twisted and turned, and the tension mounted as Keely and her friends were led off their path by numerous red herrings, which sometimes even convinced me that they had found the killer. I thought it was very interesting to see Keely’s character develop as I progressed through the book, and as the secrets revealed themselves one by one. Her relationship with Barry also flourished as the book went on, and she ended up becoming good friends with someone she was so hostile at before. Each cliff hanger left me wanting for more and kept me holding my breath as the truth was revealed. Keely’s sarcasm, and her unwilling personality gives the book a nice aspect of humour. Over all I thought that this book has a perfect balance of thriller and horror and I really enjoyed reading it.

You wouldn’t catch me dead
5/5 stars
Tess James Mackey
This is a gripping thriller right from the get go. It takes you on a roller coaster from start to finish. I liked how she used the elements of an abusive relationship, and it shows a real depth to the character when you hear her go through such a traumatising time. The emotional side to this book is one of the main reasons why this book is so good. It really makes you think of all the people who have had to go through similar things in the real world, and how she takes you into their shoes, seeing how frustrating it is, and how it can really break down a person’s character and soul. I also found that the villain was written so well, and you do grow to hate them. I loved how you can see Keely accepting that she must make some friends and how she finds it easier when she has people to put her trust into. Then she grows into a strong friendship with Barry, which shows that she can be nice when she wants to be even when after the stuff she has been through. I would say this is now one of my favourite books of all time.

You Wouldn’t Catch Me Dead is an engaging thriller with an ominous setting. The book is filled with unexpected plot twists and is a real page turner. I loved the eerie feel to this book and I really enjoyed how Tess James Mackey made the atmosphere so creepy and uncertain. I actually thought this book was quite scary but I enjoyed how it had an emotional side to it. I loved how Keely’s character started off as a quiet uninterested girl sent on a school trip in order to get into college then she had a turn. Usually, I don’t like YA murder books, but this one was a pleasant surprise.
Keely is a 16-year-old teenager who has gone through a lot in her life, including horrible things which happened to her best friend Amy.
After moving to a new school, she doesn’t plan on making friends but instead, being as invisible as possible and going to college. Her ambition to go to college leads her to enrol in a wilderness group with 5 other ambitious students.
As the group make it to the trail to start hiking, they are stunned to see their teacher dead, lying in the bottom of a ravine. This puts everyone on edge and as the death count slowly rises, more bizarre things happen to them, and their situation doesn’t get any better.
I think that the way Tess James-Mackey sets a scene is amazing as she can set an eerie atmosphere which is able to make any reader feel on the edge. I specifically loved the scenes which were set at night as the author is amazing at frightening the reader with small, horrifying details which completely change the story.

I thought this book was very average because the pace was much too slow. It took about half the book to get going. However when it did eventually all kick off it was intense and was a lot faster. I especially loved the way the fog was described at the beginning and the imagery of the hills was excellent. Although I think the description of the Abbey wasn’t deep enough but the presence of it helped set the atmosphere. I think the weather of the trip was subtle but effective at setting the mood. The fog helped create a sense of mystery, the rain a sense of sadness when Mr Crewe died and the dampness to bring Keelys spirit down.

Overall I think it was a 6/10

I really like this book because I find it smart to kill off the only one that could help, as the other teacher is useless and they have no phone signal. Even at the start of the hike you can tell it will be a horror as the setting is very eerie. I also like how the protagonist never does anything and when they do one thing it goes terribly wrong.

This book was a bore. It started really well, with a shocking murder, however slowly depleted as the murderer became more and more obvious. Personally I thought the blurb ruined the book, as it spoilt the entire plot. Furthermore, I felt that the plot was dreary and kept dragging on and on.

School teenagers head off on a school excursion to the Welsh countryside, there is nothing but creeks, valleys and rain. Everything is fine… Until the first murder happens, then the next.. Soon the students fall into a cobweb of murder and chaos. I personally liked the book, but the middle was a bit boring, and kind of threw me off the hook but then the end was great as it was suspense and action-packed.

“You Wouldn’t Catch Me Dead” Is an eventful and exciting book, full of twists that leave you guessing while reading it.
The start of the book felt quite slow and uneventful. But that is to be expected with any book of this genre! I felt the beginning had set the stage for the entire book extremely well, giving it an eerie atmosphere that was ever so intriguing.
When the first “Accident” struck (Though maybe a little bit predictable) the book started coming alive, making it impossible (for me) to put down. The eerie atmosphere combined with all that was going on made it feel fresh and exciting.
Towards the end of the book, something happens during the night which makes you realize “So this is what it was? Everything else had been a coincidence and it had been due to this all along?” But a little voice in my head remained steadfast on the idea that there was more than it seemed because it just felt like it wanted you to think it had been a coincidence (and there was still a decent chunk of pages left).
The ending was a twist though making it feel complete as a book.

Overall, I found this book a great read and enjoyed it thoroughly, and I recommend reading it.

When I first got given the book I wasn’t prepared for it. I thought it would be another one of those classic camp horror stories. YOU WOULN’T CATCH ME DEAD is a great book that has so many twists and turns that you can’t keep up. Keely embarks on a trip with her school mates and is trying to distract herself from the trauma she’s been through but what she’s going to go through will be more traumatic. When I first started reading it I was scared that I was going to get bored of it easily but I got hooked! Tess James-Mackey made me like the creepy feeling and how she expressed that in her writing and vocabulary. This book was thrilling, captivating, and overall really good! I thought this book was a terrifying, extremely interesting read, with many good plot twists. I love the description of isolation and the imagery of cold wet countryside. The only downside I had to this book was that it was excessively graphic, but other than that I thought it was fantastic. Possible Spoiler Alert!

I thought this book was scary, however it also had an emotional side to it. My favourite part was the flashbacks to before Amy died. The building of Keely’s character was also interesting to see through the book, as she started off as a quiet, uninterested pupil sent on a school trip. And we had no idea why. She turned into an emotional girl who was clearly hurting due to the loss of her best friend. I also thought that when I found out who the killer was, I wasn’t hugely shocked as the author had left subtle but noticeable clues. I also liked the way that Keely developed a strong friendship towards the end of the book, with the pupils she was on the trip with. I think that the author did leave me guessing about who the killer was throughout the book until the big clue of the dolls in the tree was disclosed. For a while, the author gave clues that the killer could be others.

‘You Wouldn’t Catch Me Dead’ is a young adult thriller. I enjoyed the description in the book, but over all thought it was far-fetched. It would be even better if the military officers didn’t come to their camp, as I felt that was quite random. I would have preferred if the plot was less predictable. I understand that Keely had been through a lot, but she linked every other thing to Amy, and I got bored of the repetition. But, I understand why other people would like it.

“You Wouldn’t Catch Me Dead” Is an interesting murder mystery book set in Wales. It follows a group of schoolchildren taking part in the Onwards Program, which is not dissimilar to a camping trip.

Things start to go wrong after an unfortunate incident occurs, resulting in the death of one of the instructors, and leaving the children with a teacher who hates children about as much as children despise her.

One of the things I loved in this book was the character development of the main character, Keely, who went from completely closed off, to allowing herself to make friends without feeling guilty.

I also enjoyed how the reader does not get Keely’s entire backstory right from the start, and the reader instead learns what happened through chapters about her past spread through the book.

I was surprised at the reveal of the murderer, but it made a lot of sense with the story, and I think the character who turned out to be the killer was the perfect fit for the role.

This book is perfect for anyone who enjoys murder mystery and thriller books, with lots of twists and turns, and exciting scenes to keep you invested in the story. This was a book which I found exceedingly difficult to put down.

In conclusion I think that “You Wouldn’t Catch me Dead” is an amazing book, keeping me interested the whole way through, and I will be reading more books by Tess James-Mackey in the future.

I quite liked this book, it was a nice murder mystery book as well as weaving Keely’s past throughout the book. The end of the story successfully tied the backstory of Keely and the present story of the killings together quite nicely. I like the fact that the story tries different methods to mislead the reader on who the killer was was quite amusing and brilliant. My favourite part was how the story suggests there might be something supernatural causing the killings in the middle of the story.

My favourite moment was when Kelly found Amy’s dolls and no one believed that it was the exact same dolls that her and her best friends used to play with. I found it very creepy and surprising. I personally didn’t like Chloe because she didn’t have her own opinion and she was always following Hannah like a dog. I strongly believed that they would have died when they didn’t I was relieved.

I found ‘You Wouldn’t Catch Me Dead’ a very tense and exciting book from start to finish; it sets the scene on a rainy school trip before it takes a dark mysterious turn when her classmates start to disappear. One of my favourite parts in the book was when Keely uncovers the murderer… with all these sudden deaths, this page-turning novel kept me on the edge of my seat.

I enjoyed this book as horror is quite a new theme for me. Very quickly I realised that the plot was very well thought out as you could see it develop. The book was very dark but I really enjoyed the ending because of the friendship that developed between Barry and Kelly but I would only recommend it to year 9 for the graphic images that come to mind.

I think this book started off okay but then it got a lot better. I liked how they used cliff hangers and made me want to carry on reading. Throughout the story I kept questioning what will happen next. When they revealed the killers it was interesting.

SPOILER ALERT!

I think this book is great. I love the characters and all their different skills and the thoughts they all possess. Without spoiling it I thought that Hannah and Chloe were up to the killings. But the plot twist was amazing to switching to Reece and about Ms Proctor. I also thought it was great that Keely got her revenge for Amy.
Also nice to see that Keely accepted her friends.

I really enjoyed this book as I thought it had a lot of drama. I also enjoyed the mystery of the book and the horror as you never know what was going to happen and it seemed full of surprises. I was quite confused and didn’t really enjoy the first 2 chapters of the book, but I think it got a lot better and I thought the tension that was created was very good, for example when they went into the old man’s house in the abbey and saw him dead with all the blood around him.

SPOILER ALERT!

I thought You Wouldn’t Catch Me Dead was slow at the beginning because there wasn’t much going on . It was boring to me until people started dying near the end and when Jack got some serious injuries. I also thought there were a lot of emotions going on at once which I thought was unnecessary. Some examples of this were when Keely was all sad because she was trapped in Wales and then started laughing with her class so instantly which I found a bit odd. My favourite part of the book was when everyone started to get killed by Reece and how he killed them with the giant knife was very cool. Over all I would give the book a 6/10.

I don’t normally read many crime-thriller books, but this one kept me on the edge of my seat. I really liked the tense and climactic atmosphere. My favorite part was probably the part where Keely discovers who the killer is, and rescues her friend from the abbey ruin. A truly brilliant read.

This is my review of ‘You wouldn’t catch me dead’

I though it was a very slow book with many ups and downs, and being honest, I LOVED this book, I thought it was so well written that I decided to read Someone is watching you. The setting was great, the anticipation was great, and I don’t think I’ve been on the edge of my seat so much before, apart from when I was maybe reading an Agatha Christie, or The hunger games.

Essentially what I’m trying to say is I loved this book, and I reckon it probably deserves to win the contest.

a guy, maybe?
